Kovalam Beach - Kerala
Famous for its sun kissed pristine beaches, Kovlam in the local language means "fringed with coconut palms" and the beautiful beaches do justice to its name.
Kovalam was a sleepy fishing village. The advent of the hippy years in the 1970’s gradually brought attention to this idyllic destination, its popularity spread and attracted the attention of the travelers coming to India from across the globe.
The city is located on the west coast of India, near the southern tip of the mainland. The beauty of Kovalam lies in its low coastal hills, innumerable palm trees and blue waters of the Arabian Sea.
Kovalam has three stretches of beautiful sandy beaches lying adjacent to each other. The beaches are known as Lighthouse, Samudra/Ashoka and Hawa beaches. Visitors to Kovalam generally stay in hotels at Lighthouse Beach while Samundra Beach is popular with local visitors and day travelers. The beach here is quite safe for swimming and one can walk up to 100m into the water without it gaining any remarkable depth. The fishing villages around Kovalam provide a glimpse of the local life.
The Lighthouse Beach is the southernmost and also the most popular of the three beaches of Kovalam. You can also climb to the top of the lighthouse through a spiral staircase until you reach the very summit. Panoramic view you get from the top makes it worth climbing these many stairs.
